Glasdon Helps Illuminate Newport's Junctions

Rebound Signmaster Illuminating Newports Junctions

Newport’s M4 road structure plan is illuminated with the help of Glasdon low energy LED traffic bollards and traffic sign lighting.

Newport, located in South East Wales, is set for a 16-month project of road improvements to ease congestion on link roads, while improving safety, along Junction 28 of the M4.

According to the Welsh Government, the M4’s Junction 28, Tredegar Park roundabout along with the adjacent roundabouts at Pont Ebbw and Bassaleg, can be used by up to more than 6,000 vehicles an hour at peak times.

Work Starts Here in Newport As a main link between West Newport and the M4, the area is a major employment hub. Therefore, providing easy access along the route and safe reliable journeys is paramount to economic regeneration.

South East Newport City Council also want to encourage more traffic to use the Southern Distributor Road and improve safety on the junctions.

The improvements have already started to increase the amount of traffic that can travel through the roundabouts, which is helping to reduce delays and congestion on the M4, A48, A467 and the Southern Distributor Road.

All three roundabouts at Tredegar Park, Bassaleg and Pont Ebbw will see additional lanes added, re-surfacing carried out, drainage installed, and new street lighting put in place.

To assist with these improvements, Glasdon were selected to provide bollards and traffic sign lighting. Rebound Signmaster™ LED Bollards and Lumino City LED Downlighters were installed by the energy company SSE.

The Rebound Signmaster™ LED Bollard was selected to mark hazards and safely direct traffic across the junctions, as supplementary traffic islands have been provided to separate flows to increase capacity and improve safety.

Rebound Signmaster LED Bollard installed in Newport It is the perfect bollard for strong visibility, with it being highly visible by day and illuminating the junctions by night.

A range of LED options are available for the bollard for either new installations or existing installations, and only drawing 5 watts of electricity, it reduces energy and maintenance costs.

The bollard is made from double-skinned, passively safe Impactapol® that is designed to minimise injury to the occupants of a vehicle, should any collide with it. It also has a drive-through performance proven to Performance Standard NE4/100 in testing by TRL.

Another product chosen for the improvements was the Lumino City™ 750 LED Downlighter, where 67 were chosen to illuminate highway road signs on the M4 J28 as part of the new street lighting.

Lumino City 750 LED Sign Light installed in Newport style= The Lumino City is an energy efficient sign light that can illuminate traffic signs from 600mm up to 750mm, and its state-of-the-art optic distributes LED light evenly using as little as 3W power consumption reducing maintenance, energy costs and carbon footprint.

The sign light is also IP66 rated, meaning it is water ingress protected to reduce maintenance time, resource and associated costs, and is protected against dust and moisture.

A moulded-in cradle also makes the Lumino City suitable for use with multiple makes of remote monitoring equipment.

Like the Signmaster, it is made from impact-absorbing Impactapol®, but with a built in ‘flex-point’ which allows the sign to withstand vehicle side swipe collisions.

Both LED products have a minimum life span of 50,000 hours with the built-in Photocell or with a CMS device, which is approximately 10 years of illuminating service to the junctions.
