About Stratford-on-Avon District Council

Since August 2022, residents across Stratford-on-Avon District have received the Council's enhanced 123+ waste collection service.

The service was introduced to reduce the amount of non-recyclable household waste and encourage residents to recycle more. It consists of:

  • Weekly food waste collections
  • Fortnightly dry recycling collections
  • Three-weekly non-recyclable household waste collections
  • Fortnightly chargeable garden waste collections

The introduction of the 123+ service has helped residents to recycle more and dispose of waste more sustainably. Stratford-on-Avon District Council wanted to extend this recycling message beyond household collections by improving on-street recycling opportunities throughout the district.

The project built upon the Council's long-standing relationship with Glasdon, which had previously supplied a number of on-street litter bins across the district, including Topsy Royale and Jubilee litter bins.

The Challenges

Stratford-on-Avon District covers a largely rural area of approximately 979 km² (378 square miles) in the heart of England and is home to more than 146,000 residents. While the district's largest town, Stratford-upon-Avon, attracts millions of visitors each year as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, the Council was keen to ensure that investment in recycling infrastructure benefited all of its main town centres.

Visitor numbers in Stratford-upon-Avon can exceed 60,000 people on a busy weekend, creating significant demand for high-quality waste and recycling facilities. Any solution therefore needed to meet the needs of both residents and visitors, while also being suitable for deployment in the district's smaller rural towns.

The Council wanted recycling bins that:

  • Were highly visible and easy to use
  • Clearly communicated accepted materials
  • Complemented the character of historic town centres
  • Matched existing street furniture where possible
  • Encouraged on-the-go recycling across the district

The Solutions

To provide a consistent and recognisable recycling service, Stratford-on-Avon District Council selected the same recycling bin design for installation across its main town centres.

Glasdon supplied Glasdon Jubilee™ 110 recycling bins, which were installed alongside existing Glasdon Jubilee litter bins already in use throughout the district. The matching design provided a cohesive appearance while making recycling facilities easy for residents and visitors to identify and use.

The introduction of dedicated on-street recycling infrastructure reinforced the Council's wider commitment to increasing recycling rates and reducing waste.

The Results

Stratford-on-Avon District Council now has on-street recycling bins located across its main rural town centres, providing convenient recycling opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

TEST

In addition, Glasdon worked with the Council to design bespoke recycling bins for Bancroft Gardens, a flagship public space in Stratford-upon-Avon. Bancroft Gardens has since retained its prestigious Green Flag Award for a second consecutive year.

The Council has also continued to achieve exceptional recycling performance. In 2024/25, Stratford-on-Avon District Council recorded the highest household recycling rate in England, demonstrating the success of its commitment to waste reduction and recycling.

The introduction of on-street recycling bins complements the Council's household recycling initiatives and reinforces the message that recycling is an important part of everyday life, whether at home or on the go.
