Glasdon Guides the Games

The XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland, with 4,947 athletes from 71 Commonwealth members competing in 18 different sports.

The logistics of such a huge event were challenging: with venues spread up to 11 miles apart across the city, the extra traffic generated by competitors, support staff and spectators put a huge amount of stress on Glasgow's road network.

The City Council and Games organisers implemented a strategy called the Games Route Network. Glasgow City Council invested £4.5 million in route upgrades, including CCTV, traffic signals, junction improvements, and new signage.

The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in the West End of Glasgow was host to boxing, wrestling, judo, netball, weightlifting and gymnastics, as well as the Games' main press and broadcast facilities. The SECC was one of the few locations to feature a designated Games Lane to keep regular traffic moving as smoothly as possible around Finnieston. Temporary signs were used to highlight the turn for the Games, but in fast-moving traffic the new temporary road layout was potentially hazardous.

Glasgow's highways contractor Luddon Construction is a long standing Glasdon customer, and the benefits of a Chevroflex Ultra™ Sign System installation at the new left turn were clear. Chevroflex Ultra created a highly visible wall effect that left motorists in no doubt of the road layout ahead. Certified passively safe to Performance Standard NE3:100, meant that it would continue to function as a statutory sign even after a collision at speeds of up to 100km/h (62mph).

Chevroflex Ultra is installed in a below-ground socket system, and individual uprights can be replaced if necessary. In this case, Luddon Construction will be removing the unit entirely at the end of the Games, and it will be reused elsewhere on Glasgow's road network - which would not be possible without Chevroflex Ultra's innovative modular design.
