Sustainability is already a priority for many organisations - but the advantages of recycling don’t end there.

With two-thirds of the UK public saying they believe businesses should do more to reduce their impact on climate change, many companies have looked for ways to lower their emissions in recent years.
For most businesses (especially SMEs), one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to reduce impact on the environment is by setting up a strong, effective recycling scheme. This has only grown more important with the introduction of government legislation on recycling, which mandates the separation and collection of different waste streams.
To comply with these regulations, any businesses that are not yet recycling will need to start. This may seem like a headache, but recycling can provide a broad range of financial, environmental, and social benefits in addition to legislative compliance. Let’s explore how.
#1 - Reduced Costs
Many organisations underestimate how much their waste is costing them. Landfill taxes have rose sharply over the past years, with the standard rate amounting to £130.75 per tonne from 1 April 2026. The lower rate is much cheaper, at £8.65 per tonne from 1 April 2026, which applies to non-hazardous and low polluting materials such as rocks, soils, and concrete.
All other waste will be subject to the higher charge, meaning businesses without a recycling scheme will be sinking lots of money into landfill taxes. Ensuring that valuable materials (such as aluminium cans, paper and cardboard, food waste, or plastic bottles) are recycled will help offset this costly disposal method, and might even earn you rebates from your waste collector for providing high quality materials.

#2 - Sustainability Credentials
Workplace recycling can contribute to your company achieving the prestigious ISO 14001 international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). The key requirements of this certification include a reduction in waste, improved resource efficiency, and limiting your business’s impact on the environment, so a recycling scheme is all but essential to meet the standard.
Setting recycling objectives (e.g. 30% of waste diverted away from landfills) is a great way to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability to auditors. You may also choose to centralise/rework your recycling stations to improve collection rates, or motivate your employees to boost staff participation, both of which can be taken into account when it comes to certification.
Earning the ISO 14001 accreditation signals that your business is actively working towards a greener future, and could distinguish you from the competition who may have flimsier credentials. Additionally, ISO 14001 is often a requirement for large government and corporate tenders, allowing your business to gain access to a larger pool of opportunities. It can even reduce insurance costs, as accredited companies are typically deemed lower risk for environmental accidents.
For these reasons, green credentials (including ISO 14001) are well worth the investment for most growing companies.

#3 - Attract Top Talent
According to a survey of 3,000 workers and 1,000 HR decision makers, three in five employers have seen a rise in sustainability questions from candidates when hiring. This reflects a wider trend (often more pronounced across Millennial and Gen Z employees) of workers prioritising sustainability when deciding where to work.
Many eco-conscious employees prefer to be aligned with their employer when it comes to the environment, and while salary, location, and benefits remain important factors, candidates are increasingly looking towards sustainability to assist their decision-making. Therefore, incorporating greener practices (like a company focus on recycling) can help to attract and retain talented staff who not only perform their role, but also feel invested in your company and its values. Such strong employee retention can pay dividends in the long run.
#4 - Boost Company Culture
Maintaining an enthusiastic, engaged workforce can be challenging, but a recycling scheme plays its part in keeping employee morale high and building a community.
Recycling bins serve as a daily reminder to your employees that your company is serious about its impact on the environment, and helps reinforce a culture of responsibility and doing the right thing. There’s also the psychological impact from decluttering – a well-implemented scheme can encourage employees to dispose of their waste promptly and lead to a cleaner and more organised workplace that benefits everyone.
#5 - Earn Customer Loyalty
Just like candidates when interviewing, consumers pay close attention to a company’s sustainability practices when considering a purchase.
Being vocal about how your business is going green can help attract new customers, and seal the deal for those torn between your offering and a competitor’s. It could also help you win loyalty with existing customers, increasing the likelihood of repeat purchases and reducing churn.
